Does Chapstick Expire - chapstickDoes the chapstick/lip balm expire? Why? Why? I just used a chapstick that I noticed is a couple of months of getting out of a printed expiration date on the tube. When we look for more information about what this expiration date is or what would be exactly bad and how sure I am to use it I get nothing but disagreement and vague words about a 2-3-year shelf life for the "quality" product. I can't help but suspect that the lack of concrete answers is an indication that the date is bullshit to get you to buy more chapstick, but I don't know. Does anyone know more? It depends on the guy actually. Real brand name Chapstick uses materials less prone to frocidity than natural products like Burt bees. Lip Balm is usually made with some type of fat substance, combined with a waxy substance. Natural-type lips balms are often manufactured using oils more prone to oxidation (think unrefined natural oils such as olive oil, etc.), often add a natural preservative/antioxidant such as vitamin E that will stop oxidation. Having said this, these guys are still going wrong eventually, and they will usually smell the rancid fats pretty fast. Less natural brands will often use oil-based fats (i.e. oil jelly) that is less prone to oxidation. They will often use other types of preservatives to prolong the shelf life, such as Parabens, which can prolong the life of the shelf to a large extent compared to a natural preservative such as vitamin e. If the product smells just like the day you have it, I'd say it's still preserved and the expiration date is probably more important for its warehouses and retailers than anything. Edit: I would also mention that most companies will determine the useful life of their product (i.e. when the product becomes prone to frost or preservatives stop working too) and then apply a fairly large area of maturity around it (it makes sense that they don't want to sell some dirty 15-year-old lips balm). Obviously it is unlikely that the product will be completely fine one day and expired the following, but they do know that eventually the ingredients in the product will begin to degrade at a certain point. If they choose to be excessively cautious and say it expires 5 years before it really does, it is more a matter of company policy than nothing.
